Streets have dramatically increased and adapted over time to the modern world, and are arguably more complicated and dangerous now. Being overly naive can result in the loss of precious belongings. Worse, it can get you into unwanted conflicts. Heed these four simple tips to stay safe. Singapore’s streets are some of the safest, thanks to strict laws, low crime rates, and high-tech systems and security such as in modern condos like River Opus.
Double Check Before You Leave Anywhere
Many people are very opportunistic in finding unattended essentials; they reason it’s “finders keepers” or just basic thievery. A basic and very good rule of thumb to remember is to always double-check your pockets, bag, and surroundings in case you have missed anything before you leave any specific area or place.
Keep Your Bag in Front of You
Pickpockets try to stay out of sight to sneakily snatch an item, and some are even so skilled they can cut your bag without you noticing. So, whether you are sitting or standing, always keep your bag secured right in front of you, lining up with your belly or waist. Additionally, the same goes for pockets. The back ones are extremely vulnerable to these interactions, so keep your stuff at the front.
Minimize Activity During the Night
Common sense dictates that the streets are often safer during the day. However, if you are caught outside of your home late for some reason, avoid wearing dark or black clothes so cars can see you better, and opt for more public places to avoid unpredictable conflicts.
Stay Engaged With Your Surroundings
Avoid listening to loud music (especially when paired with noise-cancelling headphones) and being constantly attached to your phone. Nasty people will naturally perceive this behavior as an easier opportunity to do their mischief, making you a highly susceptible target. You may even walk blindly into accidents and not hear or see cars passing by.
