The Use of AI in Search Engine Optimization

By John Eberhard

In the constantly evolving world of digital marketing, staying ahead of the curve is essential. One of the innovative strategies I’ve recently adopted for several of my clients involves leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance Search Engine Optimization (SEO). Specifically, I’ve been using AI tools to rewrite and optimize web page content. The primary objective behind this is to help client web pages rank higher on search engine results pages (SERPs) for specific, strategically selected keywords. So far, this approach is delivering strong, measurable results.

The Foundation: Keyword Research

The success of any SEO campaign, AI-assisted or otherwise, begins with thorough keyword research. This is a critical phase where I identify the search terms that potential customers are actually typing into search engines. But not all keywords are created equal. The best keywords to target are those that have a healthy number of monthly searches—meaning there’s enough interest and traffic potential—but that aren’t so competitive that ranking for them becomes virtually impossible.

When conducting keyword research, I look for this balance. For local businesses, it’s especially important to focus on location-based keywords. For example, instead of simply trying to rank for “dentist,” a local practice in Miami should aim for keywords like “Miami dentist” or “best dentist in Miami.” Including geographic qualifiers significantly improves the chances of attracting the right audience while reducing competition from national or global websites.

AI-Powered Optimization

After identifying the right set of keywords, I utilize advanced AI software to optimize the existing content on a client’s website. This software analyzes how well a given web page is optimized for the chosen keywords and assigns it a score ranging from 1 to 100. The higher the score, the better the page is likely to perform in search rankings.

One of the impressive features of these AI tools is their ability to generate lists of related keywords. Incorporating these related terms into the content—without overstuffing or sounding unnatural—can further boost the page’s relevance and ranking potential. As these keywords are added, the AI system updates the page’s score in real time, providing immediate feedback on the effectiveness of the changes. Some tools even offer auto-optimization capabilities, which automatically adjust the content to improve SEO without sacrificing readability. Of course, all content created in this way requires editing to ensure readability.

The Role of Content Length

Another important factor in improving SEO is the length of the content on each page. According to HubSpot, the optimal word count for SEO purposes ranges between 2,100 and 2,400 words per page. Other sources suggest that 500 to 800 words may be sufficient in some cases. Regardless of the exact range, the key takeaway is that more comprehensive content generally performs better in search engines.

Web pages with very short content—say, only 100 to 200 words—often don’t have enough depth to satisfy search engine algorithms or user intent. These thin pages tend to rank poorly, or not at all. By expanding content length to at least the 800-word mark, and ideally beyond 1,000 words, you provide more value to visitors while also signaling to search engines that your page is authoritative and relevant.

Real-World Results

Over the past several months, I’ve used this AI-based approach to rewrite and expand numerous web pages for my clients. I focus on improving keyword integration and increasing word count while maintaining natural language and readability. As a result, I’ve seen AI optimization scores rise dramatically—often into the 70s, 80s, or even 90s out of 100. These improvements in content quality have led directly to higher search rankings across the board.

To track progress, I run detailed rankings reports for each client. These reports show how their websites perform on major search engines like Google, Yahoo, and Bing for the targeted keyword phrases. The tracking covers rankings up to the 50th position, giving a clear view of both high-performing and underperforming keywords.

Here’s a real example: One client, just six months before this work began, had no keywords ranking in the #1 spot, only 3 in the top 10, 13 in the top 20, and 44 in the top 50. After applying this AI-driven content strategy, their rankings improved significantly. Six months later, they had:

  • 4 keywords in the #1 position
  • 23 in the top 10
  • 41 in the top 20
  • 71 in the top 50

This kind of progress demonstrates the real power of combining AI technology with solid SEO principles.

A Holistic Approach

While AI tools are incredibly helpful, it’s important to understand that they work best as part of a larger, more comprehensive SEO strategy. Content optimization alone won’t drive sustained success. Other factors like technical SEO, backlinks, site speed, mobile usability, and user experience also play critical roles in a site’s ability to rank.

When these elements are combined—strong keyword research, optimized content, AI assistance, and broader SEO tactics—the result is a robust online presence that attracts traffic and generates leads.

In conclusion, AI is not just a buzzword in marketing—it’s a powerful tool that, when used correctly, can dramatically enhance your SEO efforts. Whether you’re working with a small business or a larger enterprise, incorporating AI into your SEO workflow can deliver tangible, lasting results.
